CROWLEY BIOGRAPHY
CROWLEYは、オカルト、ホラー、魔術、魔法使い等をコンセプトにしたメタルバンドとして、１９８３年に結成され、活動を開始。１９８４年には、ヴォーカル、岩井高志（イワイタカシ）、ギター、古久根吉紀（コクネヨシノリ）、ベース、畔柳則之（クロヤナギノリユキ）、ドラム、HIRO （ヒロ）という、いわゆる黄金期と言われたラインナップとなり、バンドの人気は急激に上昇した。同年（’８４）には、E.L.Lレーベルのコンピレーションアルバムに２曲、参加。その後、１９８５年にはシングル盤、「SCREAM OF DEATH」、１９８６年にはLP盤、「WHISPER OF THE EVIL」をリリースし、CROWLEYの人気は全国規模となり、更にヨーロッパ、北米、南米のメタル雑誌に紹介され、海外のプロモーターからツアーのオファーも受けるが、８６年の暮れにドラムのHIROが、マネジメントとのトラブルにより脱退し、その数ヶ月後にベースの畔柳も脱退….。結局、バンドは海外ツアー、海外レーベルからのリリースを中止せざるを得なくなってしまった。その後、バンドは新しいドラマーとベーシストを加入させ、活動を続けるが、その後は作品のリリースもないまま、CROWLEYは、８０年代後半に解散した。
８０年代当時、CROWLEYは、派手なメイクと衣装、それにステージセット、パイロや火を使った演出などを行って人気を得た日本で最初のメタルバンドでもあったが当時、メジャーのレーベルとの契約をしなかった事と、過去のレコード盤のCD再発化がされなかった事により、CROWLEYは、ある意味、伝説化した幻のバンドとなってしまった。しかしながら、その時代以降に世に出て来て、一世を風靡したヴィジュアル系を含む、アリーナやスタジアムクラスでコンサートを行うまでになった数々の後世代のバンド達に、CROWLEYは絶大なる影響を与えていたのは紛れもない事実である。
そして…….どれだけの月日が経ったのであろうか…….。奇跡は起こった!!! 2017年8月、CROWLEYが、黄金期のメンバー３人岩井高志、古久根吉紀、HIRO）にプラス、新メンバーとして、ベースに三芳俊二を迎えて遂に再始動する。当初は、METAL ALL STARS という名の大規模な北米ツアーに参加し、アメリカとカナダで、２０本のライヴを決行する事が決定したのが再結成のキッカケだった。。それに伴い、新たに歌詞を英詞にして録音されたニューアルバムを製作したがアルバム完成後、北米ツアーの延期が発表され結局、プロモーターが失踪するというアクシデントに遭い、ツアーはそのままキャンセルとなってしまった。しかしながら、CROWLEYはそれで終わってしまった訳ではない。長い眠りから覚めたCROWLEYの快進撃は、これから始まるのである。
Crowley is a Metal Band with occult, horror, and black magic conceptual themes that started performing in 1983 in Japan. From 1984 Crowley entered its Golden Period with an impressive line-up of members comprised of Takashi Iwai (vocals), Yoshinori Kokune (guitar), Noriyuki Kuroyanagi (bass), and Hiro (drums) and quickly gained popularity. In the same year, Crowley released two songs in a compilation album under the E.L.L. label, followed by the release of a single “Scream of Death” in 1985 and the LP “Whisper of Evil” in 1986, solidifying Crowley’s popularity. It was about this time that Crowley began receiving global notoriety through features in Metal Magazines in Europe and America, which eventually led to tour offers from overseas promoters. However, Hiro (drums) left the band in 1986 over disagreements in the management of the band, followed by the departure of Kuroyanagi (bass) several months later, putting an end to Crowley’s global aspirations. Although the band replaced its drummer and bassist, Crowley did not release any new works and ultimately disbanded in the late 80’s.
Back in the 80’s Crowley was renowned for being the first Japanese Metal band to pioneer the use of provocative make-up, costumes, pyromania and overall stage presence, and yet its lack of a contract with a major label and CD releases of prior records contributed to Crowley’s status as a legendary band. Crowley had a direct impact in paving the way for future generations of Visual bands, many of which performed even at the arena or stadium concert level.
And now…after such a long wait…a miracle has happened. Crowley is reuniting in August 2017 with three of the original “Golden Period” members, Takashi Iwai, Yoshinori Kokune, and Hiro, along with new bassist Shunji Miyoshi. Crowley reunited in conjunction with a plan to participate in Metal All Stars, a large scale North American tour involving 20 performances across the U.S and Canada. A renewal album was recorded with English lyrics in preparation for the event, which soon after was canceled due to the disappearance of the event promoter.
But the story of Crowley does not end here…Crowley’s resurrection from the dead begins now!
